Side Effects from Your Dog’s Rabies Vaccine

Veterinarian W. Jean Dodds, world-renowned rabies vaccination expert and co-Founder of the Rabies Challenge Fund study of the rabies vaccine, wrote an important article on rabies vaccine side effects. Read this summary or the whole journal article. Color emphasis is mine.

Rabies Virus Protection Issues and Therapy, W. Jean Dodds, Global Vaccines & Immunology Vol1(3) 51-54 2016, ISSN: 2397-575X

Although killed or inactivated products make up about 15% of the veterinary biologicals used, they have been associated with 85% of the post-vaccination reactions, mainly because of the acute adverse responses induced by the adjuvants used in companion animal…species.” [Note from Jan: adjuvants are “boosting” chemicals like aluminum.]

Killed virus vaccines like those for rabies virus…can trigger immediate and delayed adverse vaccine reactions.  While there may be immediate hypersensitivity reactions, other acute events tend to occur 24-72 hours or up to a week afterwards, and as long as 45 days later in the case of more delayed reactions.  Documented reactions in the above citations include:  behavioral aggression and separation anxiety, destruction and shredding of clothing and bedding; obsessive behavior, barking, fearfulness, self-mutilation, tail chewing; pica, with eating wood, stones, earth, and feces; seizures and epilepsy; fibrosarcomas at the injection site; and autoimmune diseases such as those affecting bone marrow and blood cells, joints, eyes, skin, kidney, liver, bowel, and CNS [central nervous system].

..rabies vaccines are the most common group of AE [adverse events] reported to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB). ”

Friday my sweet girl was happy and healthy. She ate a good dinner and was happy to play with the other dogs. Saterday morning she are her breakfast and happily jumped in the car to go get her rabies vaccination with her dog friends. She was a healthy 7 year-old sled dog. After getting back she was in the yard and I noticed changes in her behavior that seemed netological. She was stumbling and walking in circles and hurrying her head in grass and straw. I brought her in and she coward in dark corners and then crawled under a cabinet with a four inch clearence and got stuck. After getting her out I placed her in a crate turned off the light and she went to sleep. Sunday morning I let her out of the crate and she collapsed. I rushed her to the ER Vets. They gave her antibiotics and were not alarmed. I called them back when she started commuting what looked like soap suds. They suggested I take her to her vets in the morning. So I put her to bed.Today is Monday. When I checked on her this morning she was in a coma. I rushed her to her vets. The physical exam showed she had good vitals and her color was good. Her blood work was unremarkable. She was fine except being in a coma. Her vet said he had never seen anything like it and agreed it could be a reaction to the vaccine but was unable to prove it. I had her put to sleep and discussed doing a nercopsy. I declined. He reported it. I talked to the manufactre of the vaccine they offered to pay the bill’s involved. I miss my sweet girl

Forgetmenotrescueke, I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m glad, at least, that the drug maker is paying the bills. Small consolation but at least it makes them recognize the damage. Thanks for writing this.

On 3/15/18 around noon, I took our perfectly healthy 3yr old shitzhu mixed dog to get his vaccines. At 420am on 3/16/18 our dog woke us up having a major seizure. We rushed him to a vet ER and the seizures kept coming. Despite 3 hours of anti seizure and anesthesia meds the vet couldn’t stop the seizures and they were killing our beloved fur baby. He was suffering and we had to euthanize. My 5yr old son lost his best friend and playmate. The ER vet said it wasn’t the vaccines but my gut and heart says otherwise.

  4. Jan Says:

Cindy, I’m so sorry for your loss. Trust your gut. Your vet’s denial seems absurd. Seizures are a well-known reaction. Which vaccines did your dog get? Some or all were likely unnecessary.

When you’re up to it, please get your dog’s file from both vets and report the death to the drug maker. If you insist, they MAY pay for the ER visit (but don’t hold your breath). Also report it here: This is the only way to help stop this madness.
