Thanks again for all your help. I will have him check her growth plates. As for the rabies that is the requirement by the shelter, that it be done by 2/5/12 when she will be 5 months. I have found a vet that has the thimerasol free rabies, but still trying to find one that has the distemper and parvo only. It's definitely taking a lot of time tracking it down.

Hi again Freaking Out. I doubt it's legal to do the rabies at 5 months. Most places are 4 or earlier. Check on that.

You want to do the spaying and the rabies shot as late as possible. I really don't know which should come later. One thing you'd have to ask a vet about is: have your dog's growth plates (in her bones) matured? It's better to spay once they have so they mature properly. I suspect this is most important with big dog breeds.

Wish I could be of more help. Looks like you're making progress in any event.

Back again. Wondering your thoughts on this one. I have the chance to change the rabies date and spay date, meaning she would get the rabies about 3 weeks(4 months old) after the distemper/parvo shot then a month later get spayed (at 5 months old). This is instead of getting the distemper/parvo, 3 weeks later getting spayed(4 months old), then one month later getting the rabies(5 months old). Which would be your preference if those were your options?

Freaking, I used 200 C, but you can mix both together. Use the Lyssin and Thuja before, during and after. Write Marina at naturalrearing.com. She'll get you the product and tell you how to use it.

Good luck. I'm impressed with your efforts to safeguard your dog. Good luck with your human and canine kids!

Supposedly they will come to my house and take my dog. I was thinking of asking the vet to give some reason of illness to delay, but not sure what they would say. I will find out when I go in for her vaccine (which I need to ask if they will order it since I can't find any vet near me that uses Intervet Progard for the distemper/parvo and Merial Imrab 3TF for the rabies. Getting ready to make that call now.
I will definitely do the arnica, just not sure if I use 200 or 30. Some sites say 200 some say 30. I also saw to use Lyssin after the rabies, and possibly thuja after the distemper/parvo.
Thanks again for all your help. I'm pregnant and your help definitely lessens the stress. :)

Freaking, what is the penalty for not complying on time with the spaying? Are they doing it there? They just want to make sure you do it. I'm sure they don't want the dog back.

In any event, go to a good health food store and ask them how to give Arnica Montana pre- and post-surgery. It really helps with pain and bruising. Start giving it the morning of surgery and try to give it every two hours, then several times a day thereafter. It also helps pain and in no way interferes with surgery. I use it a lot. Surgeons also remark at how fast my dogs recover. Why they don't use it is a mystery.

Re waiting for more shots, world expert Dr. Ron Schultz, with his own dogs, doesn't even give the first shot until 15 weeks. You have to avoid unvaccinated and newly vaccinated dogs and they places they go -- including to the vet and the shelter. Watch this video. I think the subject starts about half way through. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdPhj8Vq9ck&feature=relmfu

Fight for your dog as much as you can. These are stupid bureaucratic rules. They have nothing good to do with your dog's health.

Thank you so much for your responses. The timeline requirements are from the shelter. I have to have her spayed by 1/5/12 and licensed/rabies vax by 2/5/12. I tried calling and asking for longer, but they said no.
As for the distemper/parvo her 2nd set was due on 11/24/11 and the third would be on 12/15/11. Dr. Dodds said if I keep her at home that I can just wait 2 weeks, and only do one more distemper/parvo shot. Do you think this is risky? If not I would rather just do the one shot considering her upcoming surgery on 1/4/12. Thanks again for your help!!

Freaking out, relax. Is there any reason not to postpone the spaying? In fact, it's healthier to wait a lot longer. You must make sure your dog's growth plates in her bones are mature before you spay. I'd wait at least until 6 months if possible.

It's highly unlikely anyone will rush in and take her if you're a week or so late with the rabies shot. Do what's best for your dog. And no more combo shots. Just parvo and distemper and nothing else.

In order of priorities, think health first. Get the second set of parvo and distemper. These are life-threatening diseases. You may need a third set at 12-14 weeks. If you can afford to do a titer test before the third set, you may be able to avoid the third set but it's still fairly likely your dog will need the third set. Here's Dr. Dodd's protocol: www.dogs4dogs.com/puppy-shots If it were my dog, I'd get the titer test after or before the third set. If it's positive, Dr. Dodds would likely tell you your dog has lifetime immunity to those two important diseases.

Wait a few weeks or as long as you legally can then do the rabies. I don't know the law in your state, but the more mature the dog, the easier it is on her and the more likely the shot will provide immunity.

Wait as long as you can after the rabies vaccine, then spay her.

Here are two important articles to read: http://www.dogs4dogs.com/blog/2009/10/08/protecting-dogs-from-vaccine-reactions/ and especially http://www.dogs4dogs.com/blog/2010/09/23/rabies-vaccination-12-ways-to-vaccinate-more-safely/

I'm neither a lawyer nor a vet. These are my personal opinions for information purposes only.

I have a 11 week old puppy whom I rescued from a local shelter. She was given a combo vax at 8 weeks. I haven't done anything else but was told by Dr. Dodds to just do one more in 2 weeks. My worry is that I have to have her spayed by Jan 5th, which won't leave the several weeks recommended in between vaccines and surgery. What should I do? In addition she is supposed to have her rabies vax by Feb 5, which will not give her body the several weeks on the backside of the surgery before the rabies vax. Any ideas?
