Here's some more info on vaccinating cats. It's from my www.dogs4dogs.com/truth4dogs page.

Dr. Jean Hofve, DVM and former Editor-in-Chief of The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association Journal, writes: "Ideally, for cats the Merial Purevax recombinant vaccine can be used in place of the older killed vaccines that can cause injection-site tumors." She adds: "When vaccines were given between the shoulder blades, these cancers were inoperable because they would grow into the spine, ribcage, and chest. This became such a serious problem that now it is recommended to give the rabies vaccine in the right hind leg so that when a tumor does develop, the whole leg can be amputated and thus the cat's life can be saved."

Here's an article in a vet magazine that cat lovers need to read: http://veterinarymedicine.dvm360.com/vetmed/Medicine/Research-Updates-Investigating-the-impact-of-vacci/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/632167

Trisha, first make sure cats are legally compelled to get rabies shots in your area. Second, try for an exemption which your vet should fight for.

Find another vet. To offer you a shot with the side effect of cancer is crazy. My cat expert says you want the Merial Purevax recombinant shot if you have to vaccinate, but no shot at all is better. Vaccinating a sick animal is like throwing gasoline on a fire. I'm no expert on cat shots, but see www.littlebigcat.com and www.catshots.com for more information. And why vaccinate an indoor pet unless the law requires it.

If you have to get the shot, get it in the leg, not the body. Call Merial, the manufacturer, and ask if you should vaccinate a cat diagnosed with FHV. The answer will likely be no.

I am due to take my nearly 2 year old kitten to have his 3 year rabies shot at the vet. When I called to make the appointment, they told me I had a choice btwn two diferent shots; the less expensive one that is known to have a risk of causing cancer, or a more expensive one that is comparatively risk free. I decided to do a little research online, came across your site and was surprised to see that it is not recommended to vaccinate animals with autoimmune issues. My cat was diagnosed with FHV a year ago, which we suspect he picked up at a clinic for spaying/neutering, where he also got his first rabies shot. He is on a lysine supplement daily, and after his initial upper resperatory attack has had no full-blown attack, just a few sniffles here and there. He is an indoor-only cat, so my question is should I still get his 3 year rabies shot, and is there any real difference in the two rabies shots the vet spoke of (I am willing to spend the money if there is any chance it is safer).

Like most cat people, I love this cat like a child, and don't want to do anything that could potentially harm him, since i am carrying enough guilt around about taking him to the clinic where he may have gotten sick in the first place. Thank you.

Why on earth did your vet vaccinate an immune-compromised seven year old dog? Your dog was probably immune to everything important and should have a suggested a titer test if the shot given for parvo or distemper. (What was it?) Re the rabies shot, which is required by law, most states offer an exemption for ill dogs if the vet asks for it. I'd file a complaint with the state veterinary board if I were you.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Christy, I agree with your vet's course of action. Vaccinating a sick cat could have made him much worse and the vaccine probably wouldn't have taken anyway. All manufacturers say to avoid vaccinating sick animals. I do hope your vet told you to keep your cat indoors and away from other cats.

I hope your kitty recovers quickly. In the meantime, there's a lot of cat info at www.littlebigcat.com and www.catshots.com.

Good luck.

So I feel as if I am in a catch 22. About 3 weeks ago I got a new kitten, two days later i took him to the vet for his first vaccinations. The vet said that he would not vaccinate him because he had a respirtory infection. he was put on clovimox and i was told that he could be vaccinated about a week after the treatment was over. Less than a week after ending the clovamox my kitten started vomiting, stopped eating and became lethargic. I took him back to the vet and he was diagnosed with panleukalemia. Something that could have been prevented by his vaccinations. Right now i have to give him sub q fluids and more clovamox and hope that he survives. So, I am wondering really which is worse? my kitten might not make it over the next few days. So should I have pushed the vet to vaccinate him anyway....

I brought my beloved 7 year old happy, energetic Akita to the vet for his yearly
vet visit. He was on medication for an autoimmune issue(Azathioprine 50 mg, every other day). He had been on the meds for about two years. The evening or the day after his 3 year rabies shot and one other vaccination his health rapidly declined. He was diagnosed with a spontaneous pneomothorax(Spelling?). All tests did NOT indicate any other problems such as cancer. He was operated on two times to seal the leaks in his lungs. During the second surgery which was three days after the first they were unable to find the source of the leak. His protein levels and red blood count kept getting lower and lower as the days passed. They were also collecting more and more fluids from his body after surgery. Eleven days after the vaccinations we decided to put him down. All vets claimed it was not due to the shots......I do not believe this. I only wish I could turn back the clock. Space the vaccinations. Do your research. Question yor vet! I still think they did not even remember he was on the medication. Now it is too late for my dog. I miss him so much and he was robbed of a few more years of the life he loved.

Koko, please find a vet who is skilled in homeopathy. You can find referral lists at www.dogs4dogs.com/vets This is the best way to help you dog. Painkillers won't solve the problem and as you've found out, may even make it worse.

If you can't find a homeopathy trained vet, contact me again. I know someone who'll consult by phone.

And ... instead of kicking yourself for over-vaccinating, educate yourself and your friends. There are lots of good articles here. Also, get all the shot records and all vet records since the event. You'll want to get an exemption from rabies vaccination next time around and you'll need all your records.

I wish you the best of luck.

I brought my healthy 6 year old Maltese to PET CARE A VAN here in Daytona Beach Florida for anti rabies injection. The lady sold my husband to the idea of injecting BORDETELA + DISTEMPTER + anti RABIES. Few days later, my dog couldn't walk, very disoriented, has epileptic episodes, seizures, shivering and depressed. OMG! I have so much guilt because I didn't do my research before she got vaccinated!!! I wish I read all the bad side effects that these vaccines are doing to our precious companions! I thought I was doing my dog good by getting her vaccinated. Little did I know that these vaccines will kill her system and make her very sick!!! I brought her to the VET few days after that and the VET gave her METACAM. I soon found out that METACAM for joint pain CAN KILL DOGS!!! Im so heartbroken!!! My poor precious dog is suffering because of these TOXIC VACCINES!!! I hope she makes it. I hope someone reads my comment so I can save other dogs from these deadly vaccines!!!

Chris, I'm so sorry for your loss. Here's my opinion.

Vaccine manufacturers say to vaccinate healthy dogs only. Your vet just didn't want to accept any responsibility in case you decided to report her/him to the state veterinary board -- which you should do.

You were not given informed consent. http://www.dogs4dogs.com/vaccination-informed-consent Also, why was a 6 month old dog given shots? The dog should have already had immunity. Possibly, the first rabies shot was "due," but shouldn't have been given until the dog was completely healthy.

My suggestion, get your dog's file. Find out what shots were given and let me know. Did your vet report vaccine failure (if the vet thought it had distemper)? I suggest that you report the problem to the manufacturer's and report the vet to the state veterinary board. That's the only way this insanity will stop. (So useful tips at www.dogs4dogs.com/vet.)

If you happen to live in So Cal, come to our Safer Pet Vaccination event in March and ask the experts what they think. www.petseminar.org
